Over the weekend we officially reached our goal: the raised garden beds are built and filled, the walkways are lined with gravel, and asparagus crowns, garlic, two kids of potatoes, and seeds for peas, carrots, and beets are IN. For the first time in five years, we are going to have an actual garden!
Wow, it has been five years. Our last was in 2013, the year before Mulch Boy's hospital odyssey. This year, we are fighting all our (my) instincts and being very deliberate in our planning and implementation. And that is why we now have raised garden beds, an actual planting plan, and -- starting with this post -- a journal tracking the when of our various tasks and events that happen in the yard.
Blooming
- Daffodils: bloomed mid-April
- Catmint: Began leafing mid-April
- Thyme, Montauk daisies, candytuft: Began leafing last week April
- Tulips: bloomed last week April / first week May
- Hydrangeas, beach rose, clematis: Began leafing first week May
Planting
- May 5: Asparagus crowns, garlic, peas
- May 6: Potatoes, carrots, beets
My next goal: create a table listing the planting time for all the vegetables, the expected and actual germination dates, and expected and actual maturity dates. I AM NOT MESSING AROUND, PEOPLE!
